A Holiday of Resistance

A Holiday of Resistance

By Daniel Greenfield  Sunday, December 9, 2012
The first night of Chanukah marks the beginning of a holiday that for many of its celebrants has no identity, that celebrates 'celebration', with no thought to what it is celebrating. For many Americans, Chanukah appears to overlap with Christmas, but there is no similarity between the two other than the season. The more appropriate analogy is to the 4th of July overlaid with Thanksgiving, a celebration of divine aid in a military campaign against tyrannical oppression.
The overt militarism of the Chanukah story has made it an uncomfortable fit for many Jews who have found it easier to strip away its dangerous underlying message that a time comes when you must choose between the destruction of your culture and a war you can't win. In those dark days a war must be fought if the soul of the nation is to survive.
There are worse things than death and slavery, the fates waiting for the Maccabees and their allies had they failed, the fates that came anyway when the last of the Maccabees were betrayed and murdered by Caesar's Edomite minister, whose sons went on to rule over Israel as the dynasty of Herod.
Nations can survive the mass murder of their bodies, but not the death of their spirit. A nation does not die, until its soul dies, and the soul of a nation is in its culture and its faith, not in the bodies of its citizens.
Tonight that first candle, that first glimmer of flame over oil, marks the night that the Maccabee forces entered Jerusalem, driving out the enemy armies and their Jewish collaborators, and reclaiming their people's culture and religion.
The light of the flame was a powerful message sent across time, that even in the darkest hour, hope was not lost. And Divine Providence would not abandon the people. Time passed the Maccabees fell, Jerusalem was occupied and ethnically cleansed over and over again, and still the menorah burned on. A covert message that still all hope was not lost. That Israel would rise again.
Israel had used signal fires and torches held up on mountain tops to pass along important news. The lighting of the menorah was a miniature signal fire, a perpetuation of the temple light, its eight-day light a reminder that even the smallest light can burn beyond expectation and light beyond belief and that those who trust in G-d and fight for the freedom to believe in Him, should never abandon hope.
That divine signal fire first lit in the deserts by freed slaves has been passed on for thousands of years. Today the menorah is on the seal of the State of Israel, the product of a modern day Chanukah. The mark of a Jerusalem liberated in a miracle of six days, not eight. Six as in the number of the original temple Menorah. And the one on the seal as well.

For those liberals,  Chanukah is a threatening holiday

For those liberals who believe that Jewish identity should be limited to donating to help Haiti, agitating for illegal aliens and promoting the environment; Chanukah is a threatening holiday. They have secularized it, dressed it up with teddy bears and toys, trimmed it with the ecology and civil rights of their new faith. Occasionally a Jewish liberal learns the history of it and writes an outraged essay about nationalism and militarism, but mostly they are content to bury it in the same dark cellar that they store the rest of the history of their people and the culture that they left behind.
Holidays aren't mere parties, they are messages. Knots of time that we tie around the fingers of our lives so that we remember what our ancestors meant us to never forget. That they lived and died for a reason. The party is a celebration, but if we forget what it celebrates, then it becomes a celebration of celebration. A hollow and soulless festival of the self. The Maccabees fought because they believed they had something worth fighting for. Not for their possessions, but for their traditions, their families and their G-d. The celebration of Chanukah is not just how we remember them, but how we remember that we are called upon to keep their watch. To take up their banner and carry their sword.
History is a wheel and as it turns, we see the old continents of time rising again, events revisiting themselves as the patterns of the past become new again. Ancient battles become new wars. And old struggles have to be re-fought again until we finally get them right.
Modiin, the rural center of the old Maccabee resistance, is a revived city today, larger than it ever was. Modiin-Maccabim has some 80,000 people living there. In the ancient days, this was where the Maccabee clan rose against the Seleucid conquerors over religious freedom. Today it is a place that the European Union labels an illegal settlement. A place that Jews have no right to live even though it is within sight of the Maccabees who lived and died there. Over two thousand years after Chanukah, Jews are still not allowed to live in peace in Modiin.
The new Maccabees are farmers and teachers, men and women who build families and homes in the lands of their ancestors, who brave the threats of terrorists and international tyrants to live their lives and raise their children. Knowing that they will not be allowed to live in peace, that everything they stand for is hated by the UN, in the capitals of great empires and even by their own government, they still put flame to wick and mark the first day of many days of the miracle that revived the spirit of a nation and inspires it to this day.
Nor are they allowed to live in peace in Jerusalem. In Cairo, the Muslim Brotherhood dispatches paid rapists to harass protesters and runs torture chambers for opponents of Morsi, without a word of direct condemnation from Washington. But Jewish homes always earn a swift condemnation from Washington and Brussels.
Not only may Jews not live in Modiin, but they may not live in Jerusalem either. And yet they do. They persist, to the eternal frustration of empires, in this quiet resistance of building a future with their buildings, their bodies and their lives. They persist in living where so many would like them to die. And they persist in lighting the menorah when so many would rather that it be forgotten.
The Jew today is called on to forget. To turn his children into bricks in order to construct the utopia of their new world order. To bend to the progressive wheel and wear the social justice chain, and cast his own offspring into the sea of zero population growth. To give up his nation, his land, his faith and his future to toil in the shadow of the pyramids of socialism. To go down to labor in Egypt once more, in South America and Haitian slums, in barrios and villages, in ghettos and madinas, to give up who he is in order to serve others in the new slavery of social justice.
It takes courage to resist physical oppression, but it takes even greater courage to resist cultural oppression. The terms of physical resistance are easy to understand. Force is used against force. Cultural resistance is far more difficult, and by the time the necessity for it is apparent, it can often be too late. The Maccabees had to resist not only physical oppression and armed force, but the cultural oppression of a system that regarded their monotheism, their nationalism, their traditions and rituals as barbaric. A system that much of their own fellow Jews had already accepted as right and proper.
The Maccabees rose up not only against physical oppression, Israel had and would face that over and over again, they rose up against an assault on their religious and cultural identity.  The lighting of the Menorah is the perpetuation of that cultural resistance and when it is performed properly then it reminds us that cultural oppression, like physical oppression, is ubiquitous, and that just as the forms of cultural oppression can often go unnoticed, so too the resistance to it can go unnoticed as well.

Left destroying and replacing Chanukah with the usual grab bag of social justice issues under the union label of "Tikkun Olam"

Every year that we celebrate Chanukah, the left makes another attempt to "desecrate the temple" by destroying its meaning and replacing it with the usual grab bag of social justice issues under the union label of "Tikkun Olam". And each time we push back against their ruthless assault on Jewish history and tradition the same way that the Maccabees did, by reclaiming our sacred places, cleaning away the filth left behind by the occupiers, and lighting the Menorah to remind us of who we are.
Chanukah marks the culmination of the Maccabee campaign for the liberation of Jerusalem. It is the time when we remember the men and women who refused to submit to the perversion of their values and the theft of their land. It reminds us that we must not allow our land to be stolen under any guise or allow our religion, history and culture to be perverted on any pretext. The light of the Menorah reminds us that the sacredness of a nation is in its spirit and that preserving that spirit is an eternal struggle against the conquerors of land and the tyrants of souls.

Chanukah is a Holiday of Resistance

Chanukah is a Holiday of Resistance. It commemorates the physical and spiritual resistance that is required of us sooner or later in all times. Chanukah takes us back to the armed resistance and the moral awakening that liberated Jerusalem and connected the Jewish people with their G-d once again. And that reminds us to never give up, not in the face of an assault on our bodies or on our culture. The lights go out, but they are lit again, each day, for thousands of years, reminding us to hold on to our traditions and our faith, rather than trade them in for the trendy trinkets and cheap jewelery of progressive liberalism.
To light the menorah on Chanukah is to pass on a signal fire that has been kept lit for thousands of years. From the first holiday of Passover, after which the freed slaves kindled the first Menorah, to the final holiday of Chanukah, that light burns on. The historical cycle of Jewish holidays begins with Moshe confronting Pharaoh and demanding the freedom of the Jewish people. It ends with the Maccabees standing up to the tyranny of Antiochus and fighting for the right of the Jewish people to live under their own rule on their own land.
The lights of the menorah embody the spirit of the Jewish people. A spirit that has outlived the atrocities of every tyrant. In the heart of the flame that has burned for a thousand years lives the soul of a people.

ActionIsrael Announcements: November 19, 2012

The Solidarity Meeting at HEA Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 7:00 pm at HEA, as below.

1. International media buying Hamas stories?
2. Local Colorado Solidarity meeting tomorrow night

*1. It is a long-standing tradition for American and other media reporters and journalists to stay at the American Colony Hotel and bar in East Jerusalem and use the same sources for their stories. Is this happening again? The front page of the Denver Post, the homepage of many Internet servers, and various international media are highlighting what they call "civilian deaths" caused by the IDF and have neglected to report that Israel is carefully targeting missile and arms sites in Gaza. See the below article for one example. Hamas has intentionally located their weapons caches in schools, hospitals, private homes, and (as below) beneath athletic fields. Write to your local media with information.

** 2. Community Solidarity Meeting Tues., Nov. 20: 7:00 pm at Hebrew Educational Alliance, 3600 S. Ivanhoe St., Denver 80237 (just south of Hampden Ave.) For more info: Janet Sherman, JCRC/AJF, 303.316.6490  jsherman@ajfcolorado.org

IDF Blows Up Hamas Soccer Field-Missile Site
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu IDF Blows Up Hamas Soccer Field-Missile Site- Arutz Sheva

The IDF Sunday night bombed a Gaza City soccer field that camouflaged a Hamas underground missile launching site it used to attack Tel Aviv last Friday.

Use of the soccer field to attack Israel explains several Hamas claims in the past that Israel has attacked children playing soccer.

Covering an underground missile site with a soccer field is part of Hamas's strategy to use civilian sites for terrorist activities.

The strategy has been effective in causing deaths to civilians who live in homes that are used to house terrorists or serve as weapons depots.

Hamas has claimed that dozens of civilians have been killed in Operation Pillar of Defense, and mainstream media has repeated the claims without verification.

The IDF reiterated to Arutz Sheva on Monday that it knows of no injuries to journalists, as claimed by Hamas and repeated by foreign media after the Air Force bombed a Hamas communications antenna on Sunday.

The Air Force also eliminated two terrorists on a motorcycle Monday. Hamas initially told media the terrorists were journalists but later retracted the claim.

Fw: GAZA WAR UPDATE FROM AAT for Monday

If the reports we are receiving tell the whole story. a ceasefire in the Gaza War in the next few days seems unlikely. This means that Israel will probably launch a ground offensive sometime this week. They have 16,000 troops in position and the government has authorized the mobilization of up to 30,000 reservists. Israel would not go to this effort and expense just to scare Hamas.

Israel is probably waiting to allow IDF air power to soften targets on the ground, and also to show a degree of restraint to the world. They want to say “See: we tried to stop the rockets without invading Gaza, but it was not enough and we cannot let our citizens in Israel live like this”.

When Israel does invade it will be a major escalation of the conflict. The IDF ground forces will be unstoppable. Then Israel’s real opponents will identify themselves by their cry for restraint and a ceasefire.

Now is the time to write The Denver Post and other newspapers to say that America should let Israel do the job. Talk shows are even better venues. Stay active.

We will be sending these updates daily while the war builds and continues. Here is a short news update.

After quiet night, rockets begin anew in southern Israel

Terrorists in Gaza renew rocket fire after desisting from launches overnight; Israeli strikes in Gaza kill nine through the night, target police station in Gaza City.

REUTERS/Darren Whiteside

Terrorists in the Gaza strip renewed their fire Monday morning after a relatively quiet night on the Israeli front, setting off the red alerts in southern towns.

Israeli strikes in Gaza killed nine people overnight Sunday, Palestinian sources reported. One of the strikes hit a police station in Gaza City. The IDF also hit over 80 rocket launchers in the Gaza Strip overnight Sunday, in addition to tunnels, training camps, weapons caches and terror cells that fired on Israel in recent days, bringing the grand total of targets to 1,350 since the start of Operation Pillar of Defense on Wednesday.

Hamas fired its most intense rocket salvos yet on southern Israel on Sunday, as it and other terrorist factions launched 120 rockets into Israel during the day, including two Fajr-5 missiles at Tel Aviv on Sunday evening.

Both were intercepted over the Dan region.

The IAF struck over 120 targets in Gaza, and targeted senior operational Hamas terrorists orchestrating attacks on Israeli communities.

Seventy-six rockets exploded during the course of the day in southern Israel, with Ashdod coming under its heaviest barrage yet by seven Grad rockets. Six were intercepted and one smashed into a residential building, wounding two residents lightly. The Iron Dome intercepted 38 rockets heading for built-up areas on Sunday.

Soon after the Ashdod grad salvo on Sunday afternoon, the IDF targeted the home of the head of Hamas’s rocket program, Yahiya Abiya.

Army sources said Abiya was directly responsible for the majority of the rockets that have been fired at Israel.

It was unclear whether Abiya was hurt.

Palestinian medical sources said 11 people died in the bombing of the three-story building.

The Ma’an News Agency reported that the number of Palestinian dead since the current round of violence began last Wednesday afternoon rose to at least 72 on Sunday, with hundreds wounded.

Gaza Attacks Update from AAT

The Palestinian terror offensive from Gaza has already taken the lives of three Jewish Israelis. One of them was a mother of three kids all under the age of 5 who was also 7 months pregnant. The Israeli government is totally justified in defending their citizens by whatever means necessary.

AAT has been strategizing how best to organize a response. For one, we have been in consultation with the leadership of Allied Jewish Federation about the possibility of a community meeting this week. We are also contemplating holding a statewide rally at the State Capitol if a ground war is launched by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). If that were to happen it would certainly inflict a heavy toll on the terror capabilities of Hamas, but would also cost Israel in at least some Jewish blood. At that point many countries in the world will accuse the IDF of war crimes and begin to call for “restraint.
Our strong response here in Denver can set a tone around the country. Please watch for these AAT updates, analysis and possible calls to action.

Analysis: Cease-fire or ground offensive?

By YAAKOV LAPPIN
11/18/2012 01:17

Cessation of rockets would likely lead to end of the operation.

Four days into the operation to repress the rocket fire long afflicting the South, Israel and Hamas have reached a crossroads. It is possible, at this stage, to scale back the conflict and reach a cease-fire, if Hamas ends its indiscriminate attacks on Israeli civilians, and if it has internalized the fact that the days in which it could freely terrorize southern Israel have passed.

With nearly 1,000 key Hamas and Islamic Jihad targets destroyed in waves of Israel Air Force strikes (made possible by painstaking intelligence efforts), Hamas has sustained considerable damage. It has lost its military commander, key operational figures and most of its strategic long-range missile caches, as well as a respectable portion of its medium-range rocket stockpile.

Hamas is sporadically firing on Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, in part to hide the fact that its long-range threat has been largely destroyed, despite its access to a small number of remaining projectiles that can reach deep into Israel.

It is the South that is on the receiving end of most of the Hamas attacks.

The IDF fully expected Hamas to respond this way. The Iron Dome batteries have created an aerial blanket over Israel’s cities, sparing Israel many casualties and scenes of mayhem, and enabling the IDF to proceed according to its plan without sudden changes.

From now on, it seems, continued rocket salvos on our cities will be met with increasingly firm steps, while a cessation of rockets would likely lead to an end of the operation.

Hamas may, however, decide to keep to its jihadi ideology, and keep up appearances among the terror factions of Gaza, by continuing its war on Israeli civilians.

To deal with such a development, the IDF has been amassing infantry brigades, armored vehicles and all the necessary support components on the Gaza border. The sizable military force waiting at the gates of Gaza is no bluff.

The goal of a ground offensive would not be to topple the Hamas regime, but rather to inflict enormous damage on critical Hamas terrorist infrastructure.

A ground offensive carries risks for soldiers, and the IDF is braced for the possibility of casualties.

Hamas would find itself on the receiving end of overwhelming force, and might struggle to recover from the confrontation.

November 14th Speaker: Dr. Robert Zubrin

Robert Zubrin is a New Atlantis contributing editor, a fellow at the Center for
Security Policy, and the president of Pioneer Astronautics, an aerospace engineering
R&D firm. He also leads the Mars Society, an international organization dedicated
to furthering space exploration. For many years, he worked as a senior engineer
for Lockheed Martin. He holds a doctorate in nuclear engineering, and has nine U.S.
patents granted or pending. In addition, he is the author of the critically acclaimed

CNN, C-SPAN, the BBC, the Discovery Channel, the Science Channel, NBC, ABC, and
NPR.

Mr. Zubrin's latest book, Merchants of Despair: Radical Environmentalists, Criminal
Pseudo-Scientists, and the Fatal Cult of Antihumanism,
is the newest addition to the New Atlantis Books series. Merchants of Despair traces
the pedigree of the ideology that human beings are a cancer upon the Earth - a species
whose aspirations and appetites are endangering the natural order - and exposes
its deadly consequences in startling and horrifying detail. It exposes the worst
crimes perpetrated by this antihumanist movement, including eugenics campaigns
in the United States and genocidal anti-development and population-control programs
around the world. And it provides scientific refutations to antihumanism's major
pseudo-scientific claims, including its modern tirades against nuclear power, pesticides,
population growth, biotech foods, resource depletion, industrial development, and,
most recently, fear-mongering about global warming. The book's official homepage
is www.MerchantsOfDespair.com.
Mr. Zubrin's 2007 book on energy policy, Energy Victory: Winning the War on Terror
by Breaking Free of Oil, was excerpted in The New Atlantishere.

Fw: Fwd: The Democrats' Jewish problem by Harry Stein

The Democrats' Jewish Problem  by Harry Stein  A new book revisits an uncomfortable—and ongoing—history.  October 23, 2012

Herbert Hoover and the Jews: The Origins of the "Jewish Vote" and  Bipartisan Support for Israel, by Sonja Schoepf Wentling and Rafael  Medoff (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, 238 pp., $15)    As a Jewish liberal-turned-conservative, I am asked the question with  mind-numbing regularity: how can Jewish voters remain so attached to a  Democratic Party seemingly so often hostile to their interests? Given  Barack Obama's stance toward an Israel facing the threat of Iranian  nuclear annihilation, needless to say, that question has been posed  with particular urgency and confusion during the 2012 campaign.

Barack Obama Not Worthy Of A Single Jewish Vote
By Fred Weinberg - October 5, 2012
I grew up in what can only be described as a "liberal" Jewish household in Peoria,
Illinois. We went to a "reform" temple where, when we were growing up, keeping
kosher and certain other Jewish traditions of the "other" temple in town, the "orthodox"
institution, were not observed.
It was often suggested that our congregation was so reform that it was actually
Unitarian.
Amidst all of that liberalism, however, was a strong educational ethic, and we went
to Sunday School at Temple Anshai Emeth until we were sophomores in high school.
We learned about Jewish traditions-observed or not-and we spent a lot of time
learning about another Jewish interest that was a lot more fresh in the 50s and
60s-Israel.

In preparation for the forthcoming forum, I made a list of talking points to use
as a reference. My points go beyond the essay you thoughtfully sent to all of us.
Notes on the Candidates' Forum
Reasons to vote for Romney

1. Emphasize: Israel is not the most important factor
2. Whether and to what degree, Obama is pro Israel, his record is unambiguous who
he is for: the Muslim brotherhood in Egypt; Hamas and Hizbollah
3. General Dempsey spoke of intervening on behalf of Israel in contemptible rhetoric:
he did not want the USA to be 'complicit' in any attack on Iran
4. Obama's pro Muslim use of rhetoric: ethnic cleansing in official government documents
using words jihad or Islamist
5. Obama's bowing to a Saudi thug
6. Obama's pull out from Iraq: he did not defend US interests, did not try to maintain
a military presence; he nullified and then subverted the gains the US made in Iraq
and is allowing it to become anti American and become a satellite of Iran.
7. Obama advances the "greatness of Islam" and denigrates the greatness of the USA
8. Obama wants Israel to retreat to the 1967 armistice line
9. Appointment of Catherine Ashton, past president of the European Union, to be
chief negotiator with Iran over its nuclear weapons development. Ashton is rabidly
anti Israel
10. Obama wants to reduce the 'footprint' of the USA around the world. That means,
the Jews will lose their best ally. As the footprint of America diminishes, the
moral authority, the capacity and the will to defend Jews diminishes around the
world.
11. Jews favor equality and non discrimination: Obama's justice department is racist
anti white
12. Jews favor the rule of law. The history of the Jews illustrates their need for
open democratic rule of law that protects individual liberty. Obama directed the
chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, General Dempsey, to intimidate a insignificant
person who allegedly created an anti Muslim film trailer to compromise his First
Amendment rights.
13. Jews are entrepreneurial. Jews favor economic growth and liberty: Obama's taxes
and Obamacare will destroy the middle class and entrepreneurial capability
14. Jews favor equality of speech and free expression. Obama and Hillary Clinton
are receptive to the Muslims' anti blasphemy regulation at the UN level and in
the USA
15. Jews value education. Today, Jews are discriminated against as a consequence
of affirmative action.
16. Jews should acknowledge that support for Obama is not based on an analysis of
policies and the probable benefits of such policies but rather on leftist political
ideology, even though it hurts Jews' interests.
17. Jews should acknowledge that the larger the government, the smaller the individual,
and that Jews should not rationally risk becoming smaller and less influential.
18. When discrimination begins at serious levels against the Jews, no distinction
will be made between liberal and conservative Jews

Veteran's Passport To Hope RESULTS And Follow Up

Subject: Veteran's Passport To Hope RESULTS And Follow Up
SUPPORTERS:

Our inaugural Veteran’s Passport To Hope event was very successful.

We had nearly 700 people in attendance and raised well over $250,000 dollars.

*  We’re still compiling all of the numbers and expect the above figure to increase. We’ll send out an email with the final numbers when we have them.

For those of you who were able to contribute in some way, we thank you! Whether you were able to sponsor our event, make a donation, volunteer, donate an auction item, make an in-kind donation, or bought a ticket; it all contributed to a very successful evening.

I’d like to thank my committee chairs, my committee members, our volunteers, and all of our sponsors. Without these fine people, none of this would have been possible. To raise over a quarter of a million dollars for a first time event is quite the accomplishment. Thank you all!

Please see below for a detailed list of our sponsors and our committee members. If you know any of these people or businesses, give them a pat on the back for a job well done!

FW: The Fence Test

THE FENCE TEST: THINK ABOUT THIS, IT IS TRUE.
You can't get any more accurate than this!
This is straight forward country thinking...

Jeff Foxworthy on
the fence:

Which side of the fence?

If you ever wondered which side of the fence you sit on, this is a great test!

If a Republican doesn't like guns, he doesn't buy one.
If a Democrat doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a Republican is a vegetarian, he doesn't eat meat.
If a Democrat is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

If a Republican is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.
A Democrat wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a Republican doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels.
Democrats demand that those they don't like be shut down.

If a Republican is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church.
A Democrat non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced.

If a Republican decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it.
A Democrat demands that the rest of us pay for his.

If a Republican reads this, he'll forward it so his friends can have a good laugh.
A Democrat will delete it because he's "offended".

Well, I forwarded it.

October 17th Meeting - Speaker: State Senator Shawn Mitchell

Dear Friends,

Chag S'Maich! Hope this Sukkot season finds you with great bounty.
If you missed the first Presidential debate, you missed a great show. There were
amazing things like the "10th Amendment" and the "free market" mentioned by candidate
Romney.
Our next speaker is State Senator Shawn Mitchell. He has been a great, conservative
state lawmaker. His insight into the next session and the upcoming elections will
be well worth hearing.

Jews for Romney website

For Jewish Americans, the 2012 election has extreme implications. The outcome could have disastrous consequences that go radically beyond the impacts of any election I've seen in my lifetime.

I therefore would greatly appreciate if you could take a few moments to look over a new website that explains my concerns, concerns shared by many Jewish Americans.
The website, ColoradoJewsForRomney, is the product of a bipartisan effort. My Denver friends and I who made it include some Democrats and some Republicans. All of us fear that re-election of President Obama is unsafe for Israel.

If you find the website helpful, please be sure to read the section on What You Can Do (There is NO request for financial contributions).

Lastly, if the information on the website makes sense to you, please forward this email on to your friends, family members and other contacts, both Democrats and Republicans.
